Bring a little spring into your home

As time seems to tick ever so slowly towards spring this year, I thought I would bring a little spring indoors. Flowers are a quick and easy mood lifter for me. At this time of year, spring bulbs are readily available and to me they are like instant sunshine. If you don’t have a garden centre nearby, you can usually find inexpensive potted bulbs at your grocery store.

I love potted bulbs, but if you go one step further you can really elevate them into a beautiful display. One of my very dear friends, Stella, showed me this idea. I was awestruck by the simplicity of it and immediately had to do this in our home.

With just the simple step of separating the bulbs into individual glass jars it just makes such a difference. It also maximize the purchase of one pot of bulbs into a beautiful display… but mostly I love how you can see the roots through the glass.

These bulbs need light but try to avoid direct sunlight to prolong their blooms. As one bloom finishes you can just remove it, refresh the water and add in another bulb to keep it as a perpetual table garden.

Easy Steps to make your own spring garden

Super easy to do and makes a great project for kids as well. Gather your mason jars and old glasses and vases and some rocks or gravel. If you don’t have any these can be purchased very inexpensively at the dollar store. Pick up some bulbs from the garden centre or grocery store.

All you need are potted bulbs, glass jars and small rocks or gravel.

  • Separate the bulbs.
  • Wash the dirt off the roots.
  • Add some rocks to the jar.
  • Place the bulb in the jar.
  • Add a few more rocks for stability.
  • Add water. (Don’t submerge the bulb.)
  • Re-water every couple of days.

For visual impact, group small jars together on trays.

To make a real statement, group several of varying sizes and heights together on a glass plate. This makes a great centrepiece from all angles and you can also add in accessories or other small plants.

Have I convinced you to give it a try? Let me know.
